Die Stadt ist geprägt von indischen, Arabischen, sowie Swahili und Bajuni Einflüssen. Mombasa hat zweifellos einen der besten weißen Sandstrände und Korallenriffe, die Afrika zu bieten hat. Gepaart mit historischen Stätten und mit einer vielzahl von Hotels am Strand an der Nord-und Südküste(Diani Beach) ausgestattet, ist Mombasaa der ideale Ort für einen Strandurlaub. Die Highlights von Mombasa sind die Altstadt, Fort Jesus, Mombasa-Stoßzähne(Tusks), der Hindu-Tempel, der Bamburi-Naturpfad, das Mamba-Dorf, die Bombolulu-Werkstatt und die Gedi-Ruinen. Diani Beach ist das touristische Zentrum der Südküste. Dem Strand vorgelagert sind Riffe, die sowohl die Haie fernhalten als auch die Wellen des Meeres brechen. Die Riffe sind beliebte Tauchgebiete. Ebbe und Flut beeinflussen die Wasserstände erheblich an der Nord- und Südküste, sodass man bei Ebbe teilweise weiter in das Meer hineinlaufen muss um ins tiefere Wasser zu gelangen. Größere Orte in der Nähe sind Ukunda mit einem Flughafen für Inlandsflüge und Msambweni. Diani Beach liegt in den Resten des Küstenwaldes Jadini Forest. Dieser ist Heimat des größten kenianischen Bestands der Angola-Stummelaffen. Über deren Schutz informiert das Naturschutzzentrum des Colobustrust. Es errichtet u. a. strickleiterartige Hängebrücken „Colobridges“, mit deren Hilfe die Tiere Straßen gefahrlos überqueren können.
