This itinerary is perfect if you want to experience Switzerland’s classic contrasts: historic Lucerne, Mediterranean-flavored Lugano in Ticino, and urban-cool Zurich West. The routes are designed to make the most of panoramic train travel along the Gotthard corridor: dramatic mountain scenery, lakes, tunnels, and traditional Swiss villages along the way.
For your journey, I recommend combining practical guidebooks with more in-depth reading to enrich your experience. For Lucerne and Zurich, consider recent editions of “Rick Steves Switzerland” and the Lonely Planet “Switzerland” guide; both offer clear city walks, public transport tips, and good suggestions for lakeside strolls and viewpoints. For a more detailed regional focus on the Alps and Ticino, look at “Rough Guide to Switzerland”, which tends to give more background on culture and history. Specifically for the Gotthard Panorama Express and panoramic trains, I suggest the official Swiss Travel System brochures (available online as PDFs) and the “Switzerland by Rail” rail travel guides, which explain scenic routes, best seats, and seasonal tips. If you enjoy history, search for a book or long-form article on the Gotthard Pass and tunnel construction—these works show how this route shaped trade and travel in Europe. Finally, check the MySwitzerland.com website for up-to-date itineraries, downloadable maps, and suggested walks in Lucerne, Lugano, and Zurich; it’s an excellent complement to printed guides and will help you fine-tune day trips and viewpoints along your route.
A great experience of history comes alive: The journey leads from Ticino along the historic Gotthard panoramic route to Lucerne. Welcome to the original Switzerland!Starting in Lugano or Bellinzona, the journey takes you from the Mediterranean south right through the heart of Switzerland – and the Gotthard tunnel built in 1882 – over die Alps towards the north. En route, the church of Wassen can be seen from three different angles; thanks to the bold railway layout with its many loop tunnels it has become world-famous.On a steamboat, passengers seamlessly continue via Flüelen across Lake Lucerne. Many locations steeped in history such as the Rütliwiese, the Schillerstein and Tell Chapel greet guests with their original Swiss charm. In the afternoon, Lucerne harbour – located right next to the famous Chapel Bridge – welcomes the travellers. Alternatively, travellers can stay on the panoramic train until Arth-Goldau with direct access to the network of the Rigi Railways. And by the way: The journey can easily be travelled in the opposite direction, too.
