Jungfrau Railway

The Journey on Jungfrau Railway

Opened in 1912, the Jungfrau Railway is one of Switzerland’s most iconic mountain railways, climbing from Kleine Scheidegg (2,061 m) to the Jungfraujoch – “Top of Europe” (3,454 m). The line is a masterpiece of engineering, tunneling through the Eiger and Mönch mountains before emerging at the highest railway station in Europe.

The journey takes about 35 minutes, but its drama lies in the ascent: steep gradients, rock-carved tunnels, and sudden openings onto breathtaking alpine vistas. At the summit, travelers stand amid glaciers and peaks, surrounded by the grandeur of the Bernese Alps.

Scenic Highlights

Eiger North Face: The train passes through tunnels inside the Eiger, with viewing windows at Eigerwand and Eismeer stations, offering dramatic glacier and cliffside panoramas.

Aletsch Glacier: From Jungfraujoch, visitors see Europe’s longest glacier stretching 22 km into the distance.

Summit Views: The terrace at Jungfraujoch offers 360° panoramas of snow covered peaks and valleys.

Alpine Drama: The railway’s route itself is a highlight, cutting through sheer rock faces and emerging into dazzling light.

Activities at Jungfrau

Ice Palace: Walk through tunnels carved into solid ice, with sculptures and frozen chambers.

Snow Fun Park: Summer visitors can try sledding, tubing, or skiing on the glacier.

Hiking: Trails lead across the glacier and down toward alpine valleys.

Dining: Restaurants at Jungfraujoch serve Swiss specialties with panoramic views.

Exhibitions: Interactive displays explain the history of the railway and alpine culture.

Travel Tips

Best Season:

Summer (June–Sept): Clear skies, glacier walks, and outdoor activities.

Winter (Dec–Mar): Snow sports and magical alpine scenery.

Timing: Early morning often provides the clearest views before clouds gather.

Photography Tip: The Eismeer station window offers one of the most dramatic glacier shots.

Weather: At 3,454 m, conditions are cold year round, bring warm layers and sunglasses for snow glare.

Fun Facts

The Jungfrau Railway took 16 years to build, with tunnels blasted through solid rock.

The line was originally envisioned to reach the summit of the Jungfrau itself, but plans were scaled back to Jungfraujoch.
