About the destination

Zug is a small lakeside city in central Switzerland that quietly combines postcard beauty with a remarkably high quality of life. Just 20–30 minutes by train from Zurich and Lucerne, it’s an easy base or day-trip destination, especially for travelers interested in seeing a more local, less touristy side of Switzerland. The old town (Altstadt) sits right on the shores of Lake Zug, with cobblestone streets, pastel-colored houses, and the landmark Zytturm clock tower, whose viewing platform offers sweeping views over the rooftops and the water. The lake itself is the star of the show. In summer, you can swim from lidos (public bathing areas), rent pedal boats or paddleboards, and stroll or cycle along the lakeside promenade lined with cafes and benches. On clear evenings, locals gather by the water to watch the sunset, considered one of the most beautiful in Switzerland as the sky turns orange and pink over the distant mountains. Boat trips connect Zug with nearby lakeside villages, making for a relaxed way to explore the region. Behind the city rise gentle hills and wooded slopes that are perfect for easy hikes and family outings. The most popular excursion is Mount Zugerberg, reached by funicular in about 10 minutes from the city. From the top, you’ll find panoramic walking and biking paths, picnic spots, and in winter, small ski slopes and sledding runs—ideal if you want alpine scenery without venturing deep into the high Alps. Well-marked trails also link Zug to neighboring cantons, inviting longer walks with lake and mountain views. Despite its reputation as a low-tax business hub, Zug has a surprisingly charming cultural side. The Kunsthaus Zug hosts modern and contemporary art exhibitions, while small museums in the old town highlight local history and traditions, including the famous Zuger Kirschtorte, a cherry liqueur cake you should definitely try in one of the patisseries. With frequent trains, a compact center, and a safe, relaxed atmosphere, Zug works well as a peaceful stop between bigger Swiss highlights—or as a place to slow down and simply enjoy lakeside life.
